Background:

As the world grapples with multiple crises, South Asia faces its share of challenges ranging from political instability, economic downturns, social tensions, and environmental degradation. This conference explores how South Asian countries navigate these challenges and the strategies adopted to mitigate their impact.

Despite its fair share of challenges, the region of South Asia is emerging as the center for global geopolitics, making it a prominent and promising sub-region of Asia. As one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, regaining its status, the South Asian region is expected to play a significant role in shaping the so-called Asian century.

Home to approximately 24% of the world’s population, South Asia is known for its astounding cultural diversity, multiculturalism, and overgrowing population due to its high population growth rate. However, rapid economic and population growth has been accompanied by income inequalities, education, health inequities, environmental degradation, macroeconomic imbalances — even macroeconomic crises in some cases — and, generally, uneven public service delivery to its citizens. The region must address its various challenges, including generating employment for more than 12 million working-age people yearly and making healthcare, livelihood, education, and security available to its citizens. South Asia’s political environment, too, remains unpredictable. Politics based on identities rather than socio-economic programs remains a dominant force. Apart from the ongoing sub-regional challenges, the current historical era finds South Asia entangled in numerous emergencies, including but not limited to the continuing pandemic, political polarization, international conflicts, economic precarity, and climate emergencies that have had severe ramifications for its population. As the uncertainties hover over the South Asian region and the world at large, South Asia Future Conclave is bringing together thought leaders, independent researchers, economists, entrepreneurs, activists, graduate students, and scholars having an interest in the South Asian region from around the world to offer insights into the crises of our time and how South Asian countries can navigate the uncertainties that lie ahead

Call for Papers:

The theme of the first “South Asia Future Conclave” to be held from 14-15 February 2024 in Canada is “Navigating Challenges Post-Pandemic” and is being organized by North American Association for South Asian Affairs (NAASAA) in collaboration with Fusion Fora. The conference will be held at the University of Toronto Hart House, Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The conference will feature keynote speakers and panel discussions on various topics, including the political landscape in South Asia, economic policies and developmental challenges, social inequality and unrest, environmental sustainability, and regional cooperation. The conference will also provide academics, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers a platform to exchange ideas, share perspectives, and build collaborations.

Through a multidisciplinary lens, the conference aims to deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by South Asia and explore innovative solutions for navigating these challenges. The conference will also examine the role of civil society, media, and other stakeholders in promoting inclusive and sustainable development in the region.
The conference seeks to foster dialogue and knowledge exchange among experts and stakeholders on South Asia’s most pressing issues and lay the groundwork for future research and policy development.

About the Venue:

Hart House is a center for experiential education outside the classroom at the University of Toronto. Since it first opened its doors in 1919, Hart House has sought to function as a place where students—as well as faculty, staff, alumni and members of the broader community—find welcome and unique ways to connect with each other and the broader world through engagement with the arts, dialogue and wellness. Operating from a historic facility more than 200,000 square feet in size, as well as a 150-acre farm in Caledon, Ontario, Hart House offers a wide range of services to both students and community members through a social enterprise model that generates revenue to support its student-focused programming on all three of the University of Toronto’s campuses.

Open 365 days a year, our facilities include a range of impressive rooms for study, dining, recreation and socializing, a modern athletics and aquatics facility, a satellite farm location, the acclaimed Justina M. Barnicke Art Gallery, a dynamic theatre, complete wedding, meeting and event services as well as the top-rated Gallery Grill restaurant all housed within a stunning, neo-Gothic building.

Commissioned in 1911 by Vincent Massey, Hart House was completed in 1919 and gifted to the University of Toronto as a gathering place for learners.
